Recognizing the Impact of Stroke

June marks Stroke Awareness Month in Canada — a time to highlight the significant impact of strokes, which occur more than 100,000 times each year.1 For many Canadians, the effects of a stroke last far beyond the hospital stay, making it a leading cause of adult disability.

After a stroke, individuals may experience:

  • Loss of mobility or motor function
  • Challenges with speaking or understanding language
  • Difficulties with memory or focus
  • Emotional and behavioural shifts

These changes can make daily tasks or returning to work more challenging, but they don’t define the future. Thanks to advances in stroke treatment and rehabilitation programs, many survivors go on to rebuild their lives and regain their independence.

This Stroke Awareness Month, learn how you can reduce your risk:

  • Maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Eat a balanced, low-sodium diet
  • Stay physically active
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol use

Critical Illness and Disability insurance provide financial protection in the event of stroke and other serious illnesses that can suddenly and permanently impact families.
